Whether that becomes a life long passion or just another fad is up to you, but here are 10 good reasons to keep on plucking those strings!
1. It’s fun.
Listening to music is fun, many people do it to relax, and playing an instrument is definitely the most musical fun you can have. Once you can play a song or two, people will have fun listening to you as well.
2. It’s rewarding.
You’ll get a real sense of achievement from learning guitar, whether that’s from mastering a new chord, learning a new piece to play, or getting to grips with a tricky strum pattern. And the more effort you put in to your new hobby, the more rewarding it will be.
3. It relieves stress.
After a tough day, or an upset of some kind, just pick up your guitar, and let the music flow, releasing your stress, and calming your mind. Whatever the level of your playing, even as a beginner it’s very therapeutic.
‘Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.’ (Berthold Auerbach)
4. It’s impressive.
The guitar is cool. Always has been, always will be! Learn a piece that sounds cool, then play it for family, friends, at parties or wherever you get the chance. People will love what you’re doing and they’ll look at you in a new light.
5. It’s expressive.
You can express your emotions through your guitar playing. Blues, classical, rock . . whatever way you’re feeling there’s a guitar style to express it.
6. It’s flexible.
The guitar is such a flexible instrument, and comes in so many different types, that you can find an ideal guitar to play everything from country and western to speed metal, to spanish flamenco. Many guitarists use different guitars and play a wide range of styles.
7. It’s good exercise.
You’ll strengthen the muscles in your fingers, hands, wrists and arms, just playing the guitar. That’s before you get up on stage and start rocking out!
8. It’s sociable.
Get together with some friends for a jam session; form a band and start playing gigs; join a music group at church or school. The guitar is a great instrument to play in a group, so you can make friends, add an extra dimension to your playing, and develop your ability to work as part of a team as well.
9. It boosts your brain power.
Playing the guitar helps to develop your learning skills and your memory, whatever age you are.
