Frequently Asked Questions
Here, in no particular order (apart from the first one!), are the ten most common questions people ask when they contact me to enquire about guitar lessons. Hopefully, this will help you out as well, but please send me your own queries, using the form over to the right.
How much do lessons cost?
By far the most common question, as naturally everybody wants to know this! Currently, our standard rates are:
- €30 for the full size lesson (60 minutes, suits all ages)
- €25 for a 3/4 size lesson (45 minutes, ideal for young learners)
- €20 for a half size lesson (30 minutes, best for students under 12 years old)
Often, there are special offers on packages of lessons, and group classes. Check the home page or please ask.
What times are available for lessons?
Lessons are normally held anytime between 3pm and 9pm on weekdays, and also on Saturdays between 9am and 1pm. I try to be as flexible as possible, as I know many people are trying to fit guitar lessons for themselves or their kids into a very hectic schedule! Contact me to find out what time slots are currently available, and we should be able to work something out that suits you.
How flexible are you on times?
I try to be as flexible as possible on times, to help people to fit their guitar lessons in with work, school and other activities. It generally works best, though, if we stick to the same time every week, where this is practical for you.
How long are the lessons?
Lesson durations are noted above, with the standard rates. I generally find that a one hour lesson is best for most people. Younger learners are better suited to a shorter lesson when they are starting off, particularly as their fingers get used to playing, but can then graduate to longer lessons as they progress.
How often should I have lessons?
Once a week is ideal, providing that you are doing regular practice in between lessons. A weekly lesson allow you to work on what you have learnt, and to be ready to build on this next time. It can be more difficult to stay focused if you have lessons less often. However, if you aren’t able to take a lesson every week, you can still make steady progress, providing that you are disciplined about practicing.
Do I have to sign up for a course or can I just take one lesson to try it out?
You can certainly come along for one lesson, to see how it goes. There’s no need to commit to more than you want to, although I hope you’ll see the benefits of taking guitar lessons, and keep coming back!
I haven’t got a guitar yet. Can I still come for lessons?
I have several guitars available, of different types. You’re very welcome to try them out in your first lesson, and I can advise you what type of guitar would be best for you. To get the full benefit of lessons, though, you would then need to buy or borrow a guitar so that you can practice in between lessons.
Where are lessons held? Can I park there?
There is a location map here, and we have parking available for you. If you contact me, I’ll send you detailed directions on how to find us and where to park.
Do you do lessons in the student’s home?
Lessons are normally held here. We have a great set up with everything necessary for the lessons, and people generally prefer to be away from the distractions of home.
What age can kids get started at?
I usually find that kids are not ready to begin guitar lessons until they are about 8 years old, as it is only at that age that they have developed the necessary concentration, coordination and fine motor skills to be able to learn successfully. I have taught younger children, and sometimes they get on well, but I have often found that they struggle with it, and this can be frustrating for them and can discourage them from learning. In general I would recommend 8 years old as a good age to get started. Of course, whatever age they are, the most crucial part of learning is that they practice for at least five minutes every day in between lessons!
Are lessons one to one or in a group?
Most lessons are one to one, but I also regularly offer group classes. Check the website for details on when the next group classes are starting. Also, I often take a couple of family members or friends together, and that usually works very well!
I hope this has helped you out, but please get in touch with any other queries, or if you’d like to check availability and book a lesson.
